Poorest Town in Montana
I love lists. I really do. So when I ran across this relatively recent list of the poorest towns in every state, I had to check it out. And I was really surprised which Montana town made the dubious honor of poorest town. Deer Lodge. Really? Yep.
All the times I've flown by on the interstate, I've never looked over and thought, wow, Deer Lodge looks like a dump. With a population of just over 3,000 people, the median household income is right around $37,000. The rest of the state is about $10k more per year.
At least Deer Lodge isn't as broke as Deming, New Mexico, where a household earns around $26,000 per year and 1 in 3 lives in poverty. Or East Cleveland, OH... Try living on $19,500 and enjoying a 42% poverty rate. Ouch. The upside? You can buy a nice house in these places for $50,000 or less. And you can buy a cute 3 bedroom, 2 bath house in Deer Lodge for $89,900. Let's go.
