I wonder if kids even know what Memorial Day is for? Today's educational system does not necessarily like to acknowledge the U.S. military and its history. It's the most important holiday that recognizes all of the brave men and women who have lost their lives fighting for us. It was originally called Decoration Day after the Civil War, but they changed it in the late 60s. They also moved it from May 30th to the last Monday in May so people could enjoy a 3-day weekend. That was part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved four holidays to Mondays. It was more about a 3-day weekend than what it stood for and its significance in our history. I know what Memorial Day means to me and I'll never forget that courage and sacrifice.
