Royer has been part of the sled dog racing world for decades and shows no sign of stopping. When she was just 17 years old, she became the youngest competitor and first woman to win Montana’s Race to the Sky. She has raced the Iditarod multiple times and finished an impressive third place in 2019.

When Did the Iditarod Start?

The Iditarod itself began in 1973 as a way to honor Alaska’s sled dog heritage. The idea was championed by Joe Redington Sr., who believed the tradition of working sled dogs should be preserved. Today, winning teams often complete the journey in about eight to nine days. With the race still underway, Montanans have plenty of reason to keep an eye on the leaderboard.

The Hell's A-Roarin' Horse Drive

The Hell’s A-Roarin’ Horse Drive happens every Memorial Day weekend in Gardiner, Montana, as hundreds of horses are driven from the rodeo grounds up to the mountain town of Jardine. Hosted by Susan and Warren Johnson of Hell’s A-Roarin’ Outfitters, this Western tradition honors veterans and supports them in a meaningful way. All net proceeds from the event’s live auction go toward purchasing Action Trackchairs—custom, all-terrain wheelchairs that help disabled veterans regain their freedom and access to the outdoors. It’s a powerful mix of community, heritage, and heartfelt purpose.
