READ MORE: Is Montana becoming a wealthy person's playground?
This isn't Breaking News, it's been going on for decades. However, over the last few years, it feels like it's been happening more often. For many, the idea of folks moving here from someplace else and buying up large portions of the state is extremely frustrating.
Keep in mind that much of Montana is owned by both the Federal and State Governments and between the two of them, they own around 32 million acres across the state.
But what about the private landowners? Not every large landowner in Montana is from out of state. In fact, for many, the land they own has been in the family for generations, however, Montana certainly has its share of folks that are not native and own huge tracts of land.
Why are so many Montanans upset of the selling of private lands?
While it might not seem like a big deal to some, it's extremely frustrating to others. Montana has long been known for its access to public lands. Whether fishing, hunting, or just exploring, Montanans have enjoyed these lands for generations.
So, what's the problem?
The problem is that access to those public lands is getting harder to come by. Wealthy folks and companies have been buying large tracts of land across the state and have limited how to reach those public lands. In many cases, to have access to public lands, you must get permission from private landowners to move across their property.
That is a sore spot for many locals. Let's take a look at The Top 5 according to the folks over at AZ Animals
