Have you ever wondered what tools of the trade we use in Media to keep informed on the Weather? Well, let me shine some light on them. They aren't exclusive, but they generally aren't used by the public at large. Here are my favorite apps to stay in the know on the weather in Billings!

Radar: RadarScope

For the absolute BEST radar option, I used RadarScope... and without naming anyone, I can tell you meteorologists ALSO use RadarScope. It's available on Android and iPhone, and costs $9.99... but it is worth every penny. Sure, it isn't as "feature-packed" as Accuweather or other apps, but for getting the most accurate radar imagery, this is the BEST. Plus, when you learn about the other radar views and what they can do... You will never use another app again.

Forecast: NWS

Want the latest forecast, directly from NWS, without Ads and other stuff? Here's what we use. The National Weather Service has made this available to everyone, for free, and is always available (excluding some very rare instances where it isn't working). Simply visit Weather.gov, type in your zip code in the search bar, and you'll get the 7-Day Forecast. This is one you can rely on for trip planning, as the accuracy is very high. Plus, this is where you find severe weather information (the EXACT information you hear on our radio stations).

Road Conditions: 511MT.net

A new tool from the state, 511mt.net is the modern relative of the classic MT State Road Reports. You'll find information on weather closures, crashes, and more. If you click a road segment, it'll give you details on that road and if travel is safe. A wonderful solution, that is quick and easy, rather than relying on the word of someone on Facebook.

Traffic: Google Maps

Finally, if you're wondering how the traffic is in Billings, the absolute BEST tool in my eyes is simply Google Maps. If you enable the "Traffic" overlay, it will show you near real-time traffic throughout Montana, using data from devices on the road right now. Quite handy! And, if you've ever heard a Montana radio announcer talk traffic... this is the tool they used.
