My “Weird” Apology to Montana State QB Tommy Mellott
I'm a huge fan of the Montana State Bobcats. I recently ran into quarterback Tommy Mellott at a grocery store in Bozeman, and I did something really dumb. Here's what happened.
A few weeks ago I was grocery shopping and saw Tommy Mellott in the store with some friends. When I saw him, I did something really embarrassing and I have been thinking about it ever since.
I had a total fan girl moment and screeched out "Oh my gosh, you're Tommy Mellott", and I'm pretty sure I creeped him out. I reached out to shake his hand, and after hesitating, he decided to oblige. I could tell by the look on his face that he was a bit uncomfortable.
Tommy probably doesn't mind the attention when it comes from people that are in his age group, but when a chubby guy in his late 30s has a fan girl moment when he meets you, I understand that it may be a little weird.
Everybody loves "Touchdown Tommy", and there's no denying that he's a local celebrity of sorts. I'm sure he meets a lot of fans, and he may not even remember our meeting, but it's been on my mind ever since it happened.
In retrospect, I should've handled the situation like a mature adult, but I thought it was really cool to meet him in person. Even though he was clearly freaked out, he handled the situation with class.
Tommy, if you happen to read this, I want to apologize for having a fan girl moment.
