PHOTOS: Montana’s Underground Town is Amazing
Havre Beneath the Streets is one of the most interesting places in the Treasure State for those who enjoy Montana history. It's been on my list of historical attractions for some time, and last weekend I finally got to check it out.
My daughter and her husband, Parker, are both teachers in Havre. We make it up to the Hi-Line a couple of times per year to visit. The first time we went, I didn't have time to take the Beneath the Streets tour. On another visit, it was temporarily closed because of a flood.
This time around, the stars aligned, and Parker and I set out on a crisp fall Sunday morning in Havre to take the tour. Note: reservations are required. They try to keep the group size to 20 or fewer people, and once you enter the maze of underground rooms, you can see why.
Our tour was at 9:30 and we arrived a few minutes early at the designated address, shared by The Havre Historical Underground and the Frank DeRosa Railroad Museum.
The railroad museum is not huge, but it is PACKED with interesting railroad artifacts and old photos. If you're into trains, you'll want to spend some time here.
Next, our tour guide, Kathie Cary, led us about a half-block down the sidewalk to the entrance stairwell to the underground museum, right on the corner of US Hwy 2 and 3rd Avenue. Cary was a fun, witty, fantastic guide, and her passion and knowledge about Havre's history are evident.
Check out my photo gallery of Havre Beneath the Streets below.
I'll try to explain what you're looking at, without giving away too many details of the tour. Adult tickets are $17, and they host tours year-round. Next time you're on the Hi-Line, check out Havre Beneath the Streets, aka, "the Havre Underground." You won't be disappointed.
