Don’t Miss the Spring Seed Swap at Billings Public Library
If you can feel it in your bones, you’re not alone. Montana gardeners start getting a little antsy with anticipation this time of year, plotting out our gardens, and maybe even starting some seedlings indoors. It doesn't help that it's felt like spring for a month already, with these unseasonable warm temps.
Granted, "safe frost" time is typically Mother's Day weekend in the Billings area. It's far too early to plant anything, really. However, you might want to mark Saturday, March 7th, on your calendar for the annual Community Seed Swap.
Hosted by the growing pros at the MSU Extension Office - Yellowstone County, the event runs from 11 AM to 1:30 PM at the Billings Public Library (510 N. Broadway) in the Community Room.
If you’ve never been, this isn’t some stuffy plant club meeting where everyone judges your gardening skills (or lack thereof). It’s one of the unofficial kickoff events to gardening season in the Magic City, and last year, more than 300 people showed up. Apparently, we’re a bunch of dirt-loving optimists around here.
Here’s how it works.
Show up, grab some free seed packets, and if you’ve got extras from last year, bring them to share. Expect a solid mix of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Whether you’re planting a full backyard garden, a few raised beds, or one brave pot on your apartment balcony, there’s something for you.
You’ll also get to connect with local community groups and gardens offering classes, volunteer opportunities, and plenty of practical advice. It’s free, it’s local, and it might just be the thing that turns your yard into something brag-worthy by August.
