St. Patrick’s Day is one of those holidays Montanans look forward to every year. Well, especially in Butte, where the town practically turns green for the celebration. With deep Irish roots and one of the biggest parades in the country, March 17 is kind of a big deal there. That is why a recent study might raise a few eyebrows here in Montana.

The research, conducted by BetMGM, looked at how enthusiasm for St. Patrick’s Day has changed across the United States. They reviewed three years of Google search data tied to the holiday. That included searches related to drinks, green clothing, party supplies, Irish music, and other festive items.

They then compared that search activity with population data. From there, they created what they call a “celebration intensity” ranking that measures where the holiday seems to be gaining popularity and where it might be fading.
Some states have seen big increases in excitement around St. Patrick’s Day. The top five states gaining momentum include:
  1. New Jersey
  2. Indiana
  3. Iowa
  4. Georgia
  5. Illinois

Meanwhile, a few states appear to be cooling off a bit when it comes to the holiday. The biggest declines were seen in:
  1. Kentucky
  2. Oregon
  3. Colorado
  4. Maryland
  5. Alabama

And then there is Montana. According to the study, Montana landed at 0% change in celebration intensity. Umm… excuse me? Anyone who has spent St. Patrick’s Day in Butte might have something to say about that.
