Montana Weed Sales Reach Nearly $1 Million a DAY in 2022
We've still got two months of reporting data to go before the final, year-end tally for legal cannabis sales in Montana has been estimated by the State, but if we take a look at the sales data through October 2022, I'll admit even I was a bit shocked by the numbers.
An average of $25 million a month in sales.
As a longtime proponent of legalized recreational cannabis, it seems ironically appropriate to be writing this article the same week in history that Prohibition was repealed (December 5th, 1933). Yes, alcohol and weed are two completely different things. I get that. But making one substance illegal and the other perfectly acceptable (and often encouraged!) for adult consumption never made much sense to me. Without getting into too much personal opinion on the matter, let's look at cannabis sales data so far this year.
August was the biggest month for cannabis sales in Montana.
The Montana Department of Revenue tracks estimated monthly sales of medical marijuana and recreational marijuana HERE. Month-to-month sales numbers hover right around $25,000,000, with August hitting a high of $26.8 million. In August, about $7 million was medical cannabis and the other $19.8 million was Adult-Use recreational sales.
Montana counties with the most cannabis sales.
It stands to reason that the most populous county comes out on top here. In August 2022, Yellowstone County sold $4,457,000 in cannabis products, but cannabis lovers in Gallatin County were a close second at $4,153,000. Missoula County was #3 in August at $3,604,000. Note: I rounded these numbers slightly and did not look at all 10 months of reporting data. Feel free to dig into it HERE. Year-to-date taxes collected are estimated to be at $37.68 million.
