NSFW: This Could Be One of the Craziest Road Names in Montana
Could this be one of the craziest road names in all of Montana? More on that story below...plus- we'll tell you why Shelby went UP from 8 man to 11 man football.
I was in Helena for the Montana Chamber of Commerce Business Days at the Capitol event last week. And then I needed to be in Malta for an incredible reunion on Friday morning. So why not stop in Cut Bank and do a show from there Thursday?
Normally when I drive to Cut Bank visiting family back in the day- you just roll in right on highway 2. It's right between Shelby and Browning. But if you're driving from Helena to Cut Bank, there's about three main ways you can take.
You can take the interstate North through Great Falls on to Shelby and then go West to Cut Bank. Or you could cut straight North on Highway 89 and view the Rocky Mountain Front the entire stretch practically, and then turn east to Cut Bank when you hit Browning.
But I thought- ok, I wanna hug the mountains for most of the drive. The roads were clear but the mountains were snow capped. And what a day for a drive it was! So I decided to head North through Augusta and Choteau and then cut across near Valier to then head straight north into Cut Bank. (That's the view North of Augusta in the photo)
Sometimes I will use my navigation system even if I know the route- it helps with timing, lets you know if any construction or obstructions etc.
So I'm just about to hit my turn when all of I sudden I hear Siri say, "in 10 miles turn right on Molly's Nipple Road." What? I started busting out laughing. Did some farm kid in Valier screw around with Apple maps and Google Maps. Nope, I confirmed it with two different folks in Cut Bank. Hilarious. Apparently there's a few peaks down in Utah with the same name according to Wikipedia.
On another note, we had several great guests come and join us in Cut Bank- including longtime KSEN Sportscaster and rancher Dean Lerum who is now the Shelby football coach. He was telling me how Shelby went UP from 8 man football to 11 man football. That's pretty interesting because most small towns (and big towns frankly) are losing kids.
Why the increase in enrollment in Shelby? One big driver- Shelby is the only school between Havre and Browning that has kids in school 5 days a week, and a lot of parents don't want their kids doing the 4 day school week.
