5 Things You Shouldn’t Do on Memorial Day Weekend in Montana
Memorial Day and Veterans Day often get confused. While both honor those who’ve served, Memorial Day is specifically set aside to remember the fallen. Veterans Day, on the other hand, is for honoring those still with us. As we head toward Memorial Day weekend, take a moment to reflect on what this holiday truly means—before cracking a beer or loading up the camper.
Yes, for many Montanans, Memorial Day weekend is about camping trips, lake time, and unofficially kicking off summer. And that’s great. But in the spirit of the weekend—and for the sake of your sanity—here are a few things not to do over Memorial Day in Big Sky Country.

❌ Don’t Go to the Park
Yellowstone National Park is iconic, and on Memorial Day weekend, it’s also going to be packed. Snow still lingers at higher elevations, and roads and services may not be fully open. If Yellowstone’s on your bucket list this year, consider visiting in late summer for thinner crowds and better weather.
🚫 Don’t Drink and Drive
It’s no secret that Montanans enjoy a drink. According to a press release from Addiction Treatment Magazine, 61% of Montana adults reported drinking alcohol in the past year, one of the highest rates in the country. Worse? Montana ranks #1 per capita for alcohol-related traffic deaths. If you plan to drink, please plan for a sober ride.
🎣 Don’t Fish Without a License
It might seem harmless to cast a few lines at the lake or river on Memorial Day Weekend, but if you’re doing it without a valid fishing license, you’re rolling the dice.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will be out, and fines for fishing without a license can reach $1,000. Licenses are affordable and help protect our fisheries—just buy one.
🚤Don’t Forget the Drain Plug
Even seasoned boaters mess up. Trust me—I watched it happen. Two summers ago, my brother nearly sank his boat on Canyon Ferry after forgetting to install the drain plug. It filled with water fast, and we barely made it back to shore. Don’t be that guy. Do a full boat check before you launch.

❄ Don’t Count on Summer Weather
National ads love to paint Memorial Day as all sunshine and swimsuits. In Montana, that’s wishful thinking. Rain, wind, and even snow are still very much in play this time of year; it could be 50 degrees or it might be 85. Pack the rain gear, bring layers, and don’t let unpredictable weather catch you off guard.
