Today I received an e-mail that said "Your quick response is appreciated". I understand everyone thinks their issue should be everyone else's first priority, that's human nature. It's also human nature to see that kind of comment and want to make the response time as slow as possible... like say a week or two after the e-mail is received. No duh you'd like a quick response to your e-mail. Wouldn't we all? Stating the obvious in this "copying it into your email signature so everyone gets it every time" manner seems a little condescending if you ask me. Maybe if you really do need a quick response you could state why I should move you to the top of my to do list instead of including this little nugget with every email you send. I'm probably getting all worked up over essentially nothing but on certain days, due to all the demands in life, I feel like a borderline psychotic (as George Carlin would say) just waiting for one more thing to go wrong. Next thing you know I'm writing a blog about irritating e-mail etiquette when I really just wanted to be an airline pilot... but that's for another day.

To me this is the irritation equivalent of those people who stop you when you walk down the hall and tell you to smile with an offhanded, "why so grumpy today" or "things can't possibly be that bad". First of all I might not be grumpy, I might be focused or deep in more important thoughts than your lame attempt at small talk. I wasn't actually grumpy... until you told me to smile. Nothing like getting pulled over by the condescending happiness cops to really piss you off.

Where's my Zoloft when I need it?
