February is the Perfect Time to Fall Back in Love With Your Local Montana Library
February is National Library Lovers’ Month, and if you’re looking for a low-cost, high-reward way to feel good about your community, your local Montana library is a pretty great place to start.
Libraries across the Treasure State are using the month to remind us that they’re not just quiet buildings full of books, they’re community hubs, tech centers, study spaces, history keepers, and, in many towns, the most reliable Wi-Fi in a 30-mile radius.

I’ll admit my bias up front: I love my local library.
Shoutout to the Laurel Public Library. Every time I check out a book, I get a receipt showing how much money I saved by not buying it. That little number is oddly satisfying. I've saved hundreds of dollars.
I'll occasionally purchase non-fiction books, but when it comes to guilty pleasure thrillers, chilling horrors, or page-burning mysteries... why would I pay money for something I probably won't read more than once?

My kids love the library too, which is no small miracle considering they’re growing up in a world where Toca Boca, Adopt Me, Snapchat, and Insta seem dominate their lives.
Montana libraries are doing a lot more than just lending books.
From traveling bookmobiles in Park County, to free notary services in Conrad, to tech help for seniors in White Sulphur Springs, libraries across the state are quietly filling gaps, especially in rural communities.
Statewide, digital checkouts continue to climb, with apps like Libby seeing double-digit growth, while in-person visits are also on the rebound. According to the Montana State Library, visits hit 3.3 million in 2025, and Montanans use their libraries more per capita than the national average. In many small towns, the library is also the only dependable place to get online - for free.
National Library Lovers’ Month is your reminder: libraries still matter. Visit one. Check something out. Bring your kids. Or just enjoy the fact that one of the best things in your town is still free.
