Most of Us Have No Idea What Cinco De Mayo Is

Most Americans don't know what Cinco De Mayo is and there is a good reason for that which I'll cover in a moment.

I read that only about 10% of Americans know what the meaning behind this Mexican holiday is and I decided to put that to the test today.  I asked every person who called the request line today and only one person knew the correct answer: Celebrating Mexico's victory over France.  The most popular answer was Mexican Independence Day followed by Mexican New Year.

The truth is, this holiday is largely ignored in Mexico. So why is it we get so excited about a holiday when we don't even know why we're celebrating?  Two reasons: Tacos and beer (and some good old fashioned American marketing)
