Every year Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin publishes what it calls "The Mindset List" which is facts and figures about the incoming crop of freshmen so professors will be able to relate to their new students.

Students heading into their first year of college this year are on average 18 years old and were born in 1998. This makes me feel extra old because I graduated high school in 1998.

Here's a sampling from the List for the class of 2020...and it's pretty wild to think about:

  1. There has always been a digital swap meet called eBay.
  2. West Nile has always been a virus found in the United States.
  3. Cloning has always been a mundane laboratory procedure.
  4. The United States has always been at war.
  5. They have never had to watch or listen to programs at a scheduled time.
  6. Exxon and Mobil have always been one company.
  7. A Bush and a Clinton have always been campaigning for something big.
  8. While chads were hanging in Florida, they were potty training in all 50 states.
  9. John Elway and Wayne Gretzky have always been retired.
  10. They have never seen billboard ads for cigarettes.
