Highlights From the CMT Awards: Mark’s Take
I sit and scrutinize award shows like last night's CMT Video Music Awards. Partly because there are so many younger artists who I have never heard of that are winning. And partly because I like to see the performances.
I love the power in Carrie Underwood's voice, she rocked it on "Hate My Heart". That's amazing power in a voice.
I also liked Jelly Roll's performance of "Need A Favor". He was backed by a choir which really brought the song to a whole new level. And with three wins in the three categories he was nominated, you'd better get used to hearing from Mr. Roll. Or whatever he goes by.
I understand the all-star celebration of Lynyrd Skynyrd's music. The last original member just died. And quite frankly, a lot of their songs could be played on today's country radio.
I love Wynonna. I think Ashley McBride is here to stay. But I have no idea why they chose a 39-year-old Foreigner song. But that being said, they rocked "I Want To Know What Love Is."
I know how much these organizations are pushing to have more females get airplay on country radio. And it's happening. Kelsea Ballerini, Lainey Wilson, and Carly Pearce are being heard regularly now.
As far as the political things that went on, I just don't think the award show is the spot for it. And I've never known anybody who changed their point of view because they saw their favorite singer telling them to in a room full of other stars.
