Is The Term “Redskins” a Racial Slur? Bob Costas of NBC Sports Thinks So
This is actually something I've thought about for a long time. In 1994 St. John's University changed the nickname of their athletic teams from "Redmen" to Red Storm. The Cleveland Indians have occasionally come under scrutiny for "Chief Wahoo" which is the logo which is a caricature of a Native American but as the name "Indians" isn't inherently racist they've managed to avoid being stigmatized.
I've often wondered if a team called the Washington "Blackskins", "Yellowskins" or "Brownskins" would have had to change their name by now and the answer is an emphatic yes. Check out respected sportscaster Bob Costas take on it by watching the video. I'd love to hear your comments below.
