I know it sounds gross, but this could be the "new thing" when it comes to clothing: Clothes that you rarely have to wash. For the many Montanans on a cistern (and for lazy people who hate doing laundry), it could be big news.  The washing machine is definitely one of the biggest water guzzlers in the average household, but there's not much you can do about it if you prefer not stinking.

I saw an article on Fastcompany.com that outlines a few companies on this quest.  Their motivations are largely environmental, which the washing machine definitely impacts, using quite a bit of water and electricity to operate.  Regardless, not having to do laundry as often would be a side benefit if they're successful.
