Billings’ Beloved Discount Grocery Store is Closing its Doors
As they say, "all good things must come to an end," and that appears to be the case for Mr. Thrifty Foods in Billings. According to a Facebook post on Tuesday, June 17, the store announced the pending closure, with its last day of business set for June 25.
Mr Thrifty Food has been a Billings discount grocer for decades.
Offering "scratch and dent" bargains and lower-priced grocery goods, Mr. Thrifty at one point had two locations. The downtown store at 201 N 14th St and the West End location at 1140 S 29th St W. The West End location closed several years ago.
The downtown Mr. Thrifty building has been on the market since the first of the year, with a recent price drop to $675,000. The nearly 7,000-square-foot building is in great shape; it was built in 1980 and renovated in 2009. See the commercial listing here.

The owners of Mr Thrifty Foods also had the Lil' Market in Downtown Billings.
Located at 207 N Broadway, I was a fan of the shop with its bodega-like feeling. It opened in the summer of 2019, a year before the COVID pandemic, offering downtowners a convenient spot for basic food and household items, snacks, cold drinks, and other goodies.
