This Laurel Locomotive’s Passion for Music Lands Him MVP of the Week
Every week, we get the chance to highlight some seriously impressive students across the Billings area. One of them will win $1,000 this spring, thanks to Gerstner Adam Law. This week’s MVP reminds us that high school greatness doesn’t always wear eye black or carry a football.
Meet 17-year-old Talon Vandehey from Laurel High School.
To be fair, Talon isn’t exactly allergic to athletics. He’s spent four years in football and track, plus three years wrestling. He understands hard work, competition, and being part of a team. But what really made Talon stand out to us is where his passion truly lives: music.
Last Week's MVP: Meet Reagan Soucy - Billings West's Top Senior Student-Athlete
While some students are chasing stats, Talon is chasing sound.
Music has been the cornerstone of his high school experience. He performs in Pep Band, Jazz Band, Concert Band, and Symphonic Band, and lends his voice to the a cappella choir. He also participated in Drama, acting in a play for two years and a musical production for one year.
His primary instrument is trombone, but he plays clarinet, trumpet, piano, and is constantly teaching himself new instruments just for the love of learning. One of Talon's personal goals is to learn as many instruments as possible. At home, Mom says their house is always filled with music.
Talon doesn’t keep that passion to himself.
He’s known for helping classmates nail their parts, encouraging teammates, and stepping in wherever he’s needed. Whether it’s on stage, in rehearsal, or in competition, he leads with positivity, curiosity, and a willingness to serve others.
Talon plans to attend the University of Montana to study Music Education, intending to inspire the next generation the same way his teachers inspired him.
